Ergosterol, chemically known as 24β -methylcholesterol-5, 7-ene-3 β -hydroxyl, also called ergosterol, is a white or colorless shiny small leaf crystal or white crystalline powder. Ergosterol not only has unique physiological effects, but is also widely used in the development of drugs. Ergosterol, as an important component of fungal cell membranes, has a stable structure and strong specificity. It is more representative than glucosamine for biomass determination. Therefore, the biomass of fungi can be measured by detecting the content of ergosterol.The biological precursor of vitamin D2 exists in the cell membranes of fungi and some protozoa such as trypanosomes. Ergosterol can be used in the functional study of antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B and its analogues, as well as in the research of ergosterol biosynthetic pathways in various fungi
